It seems that during the best years of our lives, i.e. from childhood to adulthood, majority of the time is spent on pouring over study material and worrying about exams and grades. Exams are a particular source of anxiety for anyone who has some sort of academic and professional ambitions. So, if you must go through this ordeal, why not find ways to make it easier.
Let me share with you some tips and hacks to successfully deal with exams. One thing you should know is that there is no easy way to get around this job of taking exams and passing them with dignity. You may have heard of some cool sounding study hacks like incorporating music, chewing gum and luring yourself with a gummy bear trail. These things may help to some extent but at the end of the day, hard work is the only thing that will help you get through and get ahead.
1. Attend All of Your Classes
As trivial as it may sound and as uncool it may seem, there are no two ways about it. If you want to ace an exam or at least gracefully pass it, you should know what’s been happening in the class. Many teachers make it a point to include in the exams, the random pearls of knowledge they have shared during lectures.
2. Take Good Notes
It seems like a lot of work to pay attention to the lecture and write down the important parts of it but this is a key part of learning. You can find prepared notes on almost all subjects and topics but writing them down yourself actually helps great deal in assignment writing. Also, your notes don’t have to be somber lines of text on a white piece of paper. You can be creative about it and use drawings and colors to highlight important information.
3. Cramming Doesn’t Work
It is just so much more fun to throw caution to the wind and enjoy life until a day or two before the exam. Dressed in your favorite old sweats, staying up all night with a coffee pot on the side table, pouring over the unruly pile of books and notes may seem exciting and adventurous but in reality, less is gained from this exercise. Brain is the primary tool you need to study and if your brain is tired from lack of sleep, no matter how much time you spend studying, it will not help you in the exam. As a matter of fact, in many cases, it actually backfires. “Within 12 to 24 hours of the test, it’s time to stop studying. You’re not going to learn a lot of new content. The likelihood is much higher that you’re going to stress yourself out and confuse yourself. For the last minute studier, flashcards can be a good resource. They can earn you a few more points on test day, and it’s a much healthier thing to do than starting on page one of the textbook,” says Colin Gruenwald of Kaplan Test Prep.
4. Reward Yourself
Let’s face it, nobody has fun wrestling with math equations or chemistry formulas or the details of how the west was won. For most students, studying is actually a chore so you should find ways to make it interesting. One of the things you can do is to assign treats for completing specific study milestones. For example, have an ice cream sandwich after tackling a particularly nasty round of calculus problems.
