A lot of people who complain about back weight may not know the cause, but it could be as easy as their increased weight. Excess weight has been shown to be a cause of back pain in many patients. People who are overweight face an increased risk of developing back pain problems at some point in their lives. This is especially when the weight gain has been fast.

The main cause of the back pain is said to an increased strain on the muscles on people who are not obese. Studies in groups of obese people and people of standard weight showed that there was a higher incidence of obese people who complained about back pain problems as opposed to people who were not obese. It is thought that the increased weight puts a strain on the muscles and ligaments supporting the upper body on the vertebral column and thus the reason why people with weight issues have a problem with back pain.  When the pressure is exerted on the spine, there is uneven tilting in the spine as it tries to compensate itself to support the extra weight. If this weight gain is sustained over time, the spine loses its normal curvature form and an unnatural curvature develops.

The biggest challenge for people with increased weight are the people who gain weight in the belly such that their belly protrudes forward. This has the effect of pulling the pelvis forward and thus straining the lower back, causing lower back pain in the lumber section. Women with a higher waist size as well as those who are pregnant are at high risk of developing lower back pain.

One of the most difficult and painful conditions that may result from back pain due to obesity is sciatica or a herniated disc. This occurs when one of the discs of the spine are damaged as they try to compensate to support the high weight in the body. Piriforms and pinched nerves may also result as extra weight is accommodated for in places not conventionally set aside for fat or body muscles such as in between the bones that occur in the lumbar section of the spine.

In some rare cases, arthritis may result. When the excess body weight places undue pressure on the joints of the body. Osteoarthritis has been shown to be high in patients whose BMI is past 25. To manage osteoarthritis, it is recommended that moderate weight loss starts through exercise and making of conscious food choices. In some extreme cases, surgery may be the only way to correct the back pain as a result of weight. It is, however, important to note that even with the surgery, the efficacy of surgery may be limited if the weight issue is not addressed. In such people, weight loss before surgery is advisable as there this helps improve the success and efficacy of surgery.

The most effective way of dealing with back pain as a result of weight is losing the excess weight. One can easily know the ideal weight that they ought to be in by simply calculating their body mass index. This is a mathematical calculation that gives an estimate of the weight one ought to be by estimating kg/m2. The higher the BMI, the higher the chance of obesity occurring. The biggest risk factor for patients at risk of obesity and back pain as a result of weight are those patients whose weight concentrates at the mid-section of the body.
