We are all creative geniuses, but what happens when we get stuck on stupid? I am talking about the proverbial writer’s block, the lack of motivation, the lack of desire to do anything productive. We all face days where it takes so much of our energy to just go through the motions of daily life. Be it the housework, the children, the spouse, the job, we all know this feeling well. What we do, and how to overcome the lethargic motions of mundane life can make the biggest difference in asphyxiating apathy. First, we need to accept these feelings as normal and allow ourselves the down time we need to recuperate.
Often, we are compelled to out-do, over compensate, and simply push ourselves to the brink of breaking down and wallowing in mental laziness. If we change our perspective, we will realize this time is vital. It’s like a re-wiring in a sense. Of course we need to set limits to our laziness and throwing in the towel is never an option, but in all honesty, we need this down time. While we think we are not being inspired when in fact we actually are. In our subconscious minds, we are still creating. We are always dreaming, we are always thinking.
After a few days if motivation has not returned, change your environment. Get outdoors if you’re the indoors type. Or get inside if you’re the outdoorsy type. However it works, change your environment. Do something out of the ordinary. Be it that you take a different route home from work, basically just slow down and change your scenery. Be mindful. Try and you will see that noticing things around you really do make a difference. The basic point is to be patient with yourself. If after you have exhausted your patience and your creative genius has not returned, listen to music, watch a movie, visit an art museum and brain storm. If you’re a writer with writer’s block, read something new. If you’re a musician or an artist, find new music, something you’ve never listened to before. Visit a museum, search out local art.
Even if your work seems incoherent, do it anyway. Scribble, scratch, splash, do whatever feels new. This is part of the creative process. Do something different. Plain and simple, right? Not always. It takes mindfulness and a true dedication on your part. But once you make these small changes, you will notice the creative flow starts to return. Taking the creativity as it comes. Small doses are better than no dose and so with that, chip away at it, a little at a time.
Mindfulness is the key to overcoming the mental blocks that stop us from feeding our creative genius. Literally. Stop, and smell the flowers. Take the time to notice things in your environment that you normally rush past. Being mindful takes practice. Feel the textures, notice the smells, flavors, sight and sounds that are a normal part of your daily routine. Practice mindful eating, drinking, seeing, smelling, listening, by giving more of your attention to these every day moments, we see our appreciation for the simple things in life returning. And remember to enjoy the process. It’s not what you create, it’s the fact that you try.
Set aside time for yourself too. At least 10 minutes of alone time each day to spend with your thoughts is something we all can do. In this busy world, 10 minutes can seem like a time-consuming task, but when you think of it as a couple of commercials on the television, it’s not that unreasonable. Even if nothing is created during this mini-daily break, the time we spend on ourselves revitalizes us and helps us stay in-tune to who we are. When we stay tuned into ourselves, we create. Do not look at this as a chore or a task, if that happens, we all shy away from this spirited down time.
See this as your reward. You know you deserve it, and you know you will enjoy it. Just breathe, let the creative process come as it does. Do not try and force it. Simply let it be yours. When we do this, our creative genius is re-born and we move into the creative process.
And remember, the down time is vital, it is in fact part of the process. Just set limits and don’t stay down too long.
